The start of the year has been great! The students have been working very hard in our first book Thinking with Mathematical Models. Thinking with Mathematical Models focuses on linear and inverse variation. We will work on representing data patterns using tables, graphs and algebraic expressions. Our class began by counting pennies placed on virtual bridges and determining how the different layers and length would affect the outcome. Throughout this year, we will be working in the following books: Looking for Pythagoras; Growing, Growing, Growing; Butterflies, Pinwheels, and Wallpaper; Say it with Symbols; and It’s in the System. You can expect to see a new book coming home about every month and a half to two months. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call or email me.
8th Grade Mathematics Program
With the continued use of Connected Mathematics 3 (CMP3), we are looking forward to another year of student growth. With the format that stresses conceptual understanding, habits of mind, and problem solving strategies, the 8th grade is in for a fun and unique final year here at Hamlin. The year has started off with determining linear and non-linear functions. In class, we counted pennies placed on paper bridges and determined how the different layers and length would affect the outcome.
Throughout this year we are hoping to reach the following topics covered in our books:
- Thinking with Mathematical Models- Linear and Inverse Variations
- Looking for Pythagoras- Pythagorean theorem
- Growing, Growing, Growing- Exponential functions
- Butterflies, Pinwheels, and Wallpaper- Symmetry and Transformations
- Say it with Symbols- Expressions and Functions
New books should be coming home about every month and a half to two months. We are hoping to have another great year with this wonderful series. Any questions do not hesitate to contact me!
